During my recent trip to Zenglin, I had visited the ancestral temple with a view to understanding the history of my village. However, my efforts were futile as the relics and the relevant literature kept in the temple had been destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. The current record, which was copied from Haicheng is very brief. It states that Chiang clan was originated from two brothers who migrated from Anhui to Fujian and settled in Zenglin village during the realm of Chong Zhen Emperor (1628-1644) in the Ming Dynasty. The offspring of the younger brother flourished while the elder’s one were sparse. They left behind the genealogical transcript as shown below for their descendants to follow: 觀 均 文 景 倉 陽 昆 巨 以 堯 穆 明 昭 尊 维 德 興 章 龄 廷 篤 筆 照 茂 隆 光 正 允 The situation at Aotou is similar where their genealogical record was copied from Jinjiang. For easy reference by members of the Chiang clan from Autou, the record is reproduced here below: 天 彩 寿 山 丽 人 才 福 海 生 子 孙 招 孝 悌 法 祖 尚 丕 前 My great grandfather, grandfather and father were all given names based on the transcript. Their generations belonged to 昭, 尊 and 维 respectively. The practice of using the transcript to give names however stopped at my generation for my family. Nevertheless, many other families in my village continued using the transcript to name their newborns. According to the record, 德 in Zenglin corresponds to人 in Aotou while興 corresponds to才 and so on. This leads me to wonder if our ancestors from the two villages were related by blood. I will leave this to fellow clansmen who have a historical interest to make an in-depth study. |
