Mr Chen Tang – Founder of Dongguan City in Guangdong Province
Dongguan is now a bustling town with factories everywhere, giving it its name as the world’s factory. It is surprising that the founding father of the town is actually a Tonganese called Chen Tang.
In 2003, while collating the family tree, a retired secondary school teacher in Dongguan found that they were descendants of Chen Tang. According to the genealogical records, Chen Tang was from Tongan County, Yijing Village in Fujian Province.
More than 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty, Chen Tang was sent to Huizhou in Guangdong province to assume his post as a government official. After his retirement, he traveled with his three wives and six sons along Dong Jiang and arrived at Dongguan. The simple social custom and beautiful scenery there attracted him and he settled down in Dongguan for good without returning to his hometown in Fujian. His descendants now inhabit six villages in Dongguan with a population of more than 10,000, excluding another about 10,000 who had migrated elsewhere.
In recent years, there would be groups of Chen’s clansmen from Dongguan coming to Tongan for root searching every year. But where is Yijing village? Xiamen’s administrative districts have since been re-divided and there is no such village called Yijing in Tongan county anymore. It actually refers to a village called Gujing (known as Yijing formerly) in Xiangan District.
The Chen’s clansmen from Dongguan were very enthusiastic and generous. They donated large sums of money to reconstruct their ancestral temple in Gujing. When the reconstruction work was completed, they sent a delegation comprising more than 200 people to attend the temple’s grand inauguration ceremony on 4/2/2007. The event was covered by the Channel Guide, which published a special report entitled ‘Our Ancestors were in Xiamen 800 years ago’ on it.
